REINFORCING CONCRETE WITH TMT STEEL BARS
Though concrete is used everywhere around the globe, you see its looming presence everywhere in India no matter which direction you turn your head and see. RCC has radically changed the face of the construction industry since its inception by becoming the most effective construction material. It has become the most sought-after construction material due to its higher compressive strength and ability to take on any forms and shape.
WHY REINFORCEMENT IS NEEDED?
Concrete’s compressive strength is extremely strong. Tremendous amount of force is needed to crush it. However, it only requires a minimal force to make a crack on the surface by twisting or bending it. So in order to compensate for the weak tensile strength of concrete, TMT steel bars are incorporated as a support. Additionally, the super elongation property of the TMT bars also takes care of the stress on building and supports the concrete to withstand all kinds of weights.
A concrete reinforcement should not have any impurities like rust, mud, oil paints and so on. It also should be in position to cut, bend, and withstand properly. TESTING THE REINFORCEMENT
To test the strength of the reinforcement bar, following tests are performed.
- The most common test, the tensile test, is performed where the TMT bar is pressured by the tensile force and elongated to the point of break. This test is performed to determine the tensile strength of TMT bars.
- Yield stress tests put the TMT bars under deformation where they cannot be reshaped to the initial shape.
- The ductility of the TMT bar is determined by the bend & re-bend tests. In this, the TMT bars are bent to the midpoint of breaking, resulting in bending without a crack. Similarly, the re-bend test measures the aftermath of strain on ageing TMT bar.
